Why is a Wet Basement a Big Deal?
You might think that you can deal with that dampness in the basement later, but that’s a big mistake. What seems minor now can actually just be the tip of the iceberg since the walls conceal most of the effects of the water damage.
The most obvious problem that can arise from a damp basement is the spread of mould and mildew, which thrive in wet conditions and cause a whole range of breathing issues and unpleasant smells. If left untreated a leaking basement can also cause significant structural damage like erosion and crumbling to the foundation walls. Niagara Water Services is a highly trained foundation company that can assess your basement moisture to determine the best course of action to rectify your wet or damp basement.

What Is A Sump Pump?
A sump pump is a nifty electronic device that can help protect your property from water damage by pumping excess ground water from underneath your home away from your home. Sump pumps are connected to the weeping tile and are automatically triggered once the water pressure reaches a specific threshold. Installing a sump pump is not an easy DIY project: you need to ensure that the outlet is a safe distance away from your property’s foundation and angled correctly to optimize the redirection of the excess water on your property.
Although sump pumps are generally low maintenance, they require some minimal upkeep. And if you want to ensure your sump pump serves you for a long time, you will need to follow this simple sump pump care schedule:
During dry spells where the pump doesn’t see much use, connect it to a garden hose and run around 5 gallons of water through it once. This should cause the pump to engage and evacuate the water—giving you a chance to make sure the pump and lines are unobstructed and working properly.
According to the Ontario Building Code it is now mandatory to install a sump pump for gathering rain water on all new builds and new weeping tile installations. The purpose of this is to collect the rain water and pump it back out to the exterior landscaping which stops the city storm drains from overflowing hence preventing unnecessary flooding inside peoples homes when the city storm drains are unable to keep up with the excessive rain water build up across the city.
